foter sa flags celebrateEarlier this week the Minister of the Sport and Recreation, Fikile Mbalula, announced the imposition of sanctions against four of South Africa’s main sporting codes (Athletics South Africa, Cricket South Africa, Netball South Africa and South African Rugby) for not meeting the racial targets that they themselves had earlier accepted. He said that he had resolved “to revoke their privilege … to host and bid for major international tournaments” in South Africa.

FW DE KLERK FOUNDATION STATEMENT ON THE FOUNDATIONS INITIATIVE

fwdk logo engThe FW de Klerk Foundation strongly supports The Foundations Initiative because we believe that we South Africans really need to talk to one another about the challenges that confront our society. We would like to recapture the spirit of inclusivity, of listening, debating and compromising that characterised our great national constitutional dialogue during the early 90s. Who better to begin this process than the Foundations established by our founding fathers and mothers?

ARTICLE: STATE CAPTURE, ANC CAPTURE AND THE CAPTURE OF THE ECONOMY

DWS headshotThere are several aspects to the current “state capture” debate.

To start with, there is nothing new about state capture. It has always been the ANC’s openly proclaimed, and profoundly unconstitutional, policy to capture the state to promote its own political and ideological interests. According to its Strategy & Tactics documents, a key task of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR) after 1994 was

“to strengthen the hold of the democratic movement (i.e. the ANC) over state power, and to transform the state machinery to serve the cause of social transformation (i.e. the NDR): The levers of state power include the legislatures, the executives, the public service, the security forces, the judiciary, parastatals, the public broadcaster, and so on.”

ARTICLE: THE FUTURE OF AFRIKAANS AT UNIVERSITY LEVEL

CONCOURT FOTER optVladimir Lenin said that “when the time comes for us to hang the capitalists they will compete with one another to sell us the rope”.  In the same manner, Afrikaners are playing a leading role in assisting the ANC to eclipse Afrikaans as a language of tuition at university level.

Most of those involved are decent and honourable people. Many of them profess a love for Afrikaans and are determined to continue to use it in their private lives.

STATEMENT: ROBBERY AT THE OFFICES OF THE HELEN SUZMAN FOUNDATION IN JOHANNESBURG

HSF logoThe FW de Klerk Foundation would like to express its deep concern over the robbery that occurred at the offices of the Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) on Sunday, 20 March 2016.

According to media reports, two well-dressed men and a woman broke into the HSF’s offices after threatening a security guard with a firearm. The robbers stole 11 computers, a printer and documents belonging to the HSF.

Accordingly, there is every indication that the motive for the crime was to obtain information – rather than simply to steal office equipment.

TOAST BY DAVE STEWARD AT FW DE KLERK’S 80TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Some commentators believe that history is driven by great socio-economic forces – and that the role of individuals is marginal. Others argue that it is great individuals – the Alexander the Greats, the Julius Caesars and the Napoleons – who – for better or for worse – determine the course of history. Perhaps it is a combination of both factors: all ages are subject to the ebb and flow of socio-economic tides – but destiny is often determined by exceptional individuals who know how to navigate those tides and who sometimes catch the breaking wave of history. At critical times great individuals have come to the fore: “cometh the hour, cometh the man.”

STATEMENT: THE CURRENT THREAT TO SOUTH AFRICA’S CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACY

fwdk podiumThe constitutional democracy that we South Africans established 22 years ago after so many years of division and conflict is experiencing a serious crisis.

President Zuma and his faction within the ANC are threatening the future of our democracy by seizing control of key state institutions primarily for the promotion of their own personal and political agendas. These institutions include the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the Hawks and various branches of the security establishment. They are using these institutions to prosecute and intimidate opponents – outside and inside the ANC – who have had the courage to oppose and expose their unconstitutional activities.

SPEECH: SOME THOUGHTS ON THE EVE OF MY 80TH BIRTHDAY

It is perhaps appropriate to reminisce on the eve of one’s 80th birthday – and at this age I can assure you that there is great deal about which I can reminisce!

I spent my childhood on a smallholding near Krugersdorp. I remember our garden, the rockeries that my mother lovingly tended and our little orchard of peach trees. I used to help harvest the peaches that we would sell in the nearby town. I remember growing up, more or less an only child because my brother Willem was eight years older than me. My father was already busy with his political career and was often away.
