In light of recent discussions surrounding the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill (“BELA Bill”), the FW de Klerk Foundation takes note of recent reports concerning corruption within some School Governing Bodies (“SGBs”).
On 6 February 2024, the National Council of Provinces met to decide whether to grant the Western Cape Provincial Parliament’s request for an extension of the period for comments and hearings related to the Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill.

The Basic Education Laws Amendment Bill (BELA Bill) was passed by Parliament’s first house, the National Assembly on 26 October 2023.
