ARTICLE: SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT ON WORKERS’ DAY

students foterWorkers’ Day provides us with an opportunity to assess the nation’s labour relations and the degree to which our economy is succeeding in its responsibility to provide jobs for all our people – and particularly for our youth. We are confronted with the reality that, according to a recently released Statistics SA report, The Social Profile of the Youth, 2009-2014, approximately three-quarters (3.4 million) of the more than five million unemployed South Africans in 2014 were youth (aged 15–34 years). This alarming statistic requires an honest introspection into South Africa’s current modus operandi in the labour arena and calls on us to confront the failures that are crippling our ability to create an inclusive and prosperous South Africa – particularly for our young people. There are four obstacles to solving the youth unemployment crisis.

FW DE KLERK FOUNDATION STATEMENT ON THE FOUNDATIONS INITIATIVE

fwdk logo engThe FW de Klerk Foundation strongly supports The Foundations Initiative because we believe that we South Africans really need to talk to one another about the challenges that confront our society. We would like to recapture the spirit of inclusivity, of listening, debating and compromising that characterised our great national constitutional dialogue during the early 90s. ARTICLE: STATE CAPTURE, ANC CAPTURE AND THE CAPTURE OF THE ECONOMY

DWS headshotThere are several aspects to the current “state capture” debate.

To start with, there is nothing new about state capture. It has always been the ANC’s openly proclaimed, and profoundly unconstitutional, policy to capture the state to promote its own political and ideological interests. According to its Strategy & Tactics documents, a key task of the National Democratic Revolution (NDR) after 1994 was

“to strengthen the hold of the democratic movement (i.e. the ANC) over state power, and to transform the state machinery to serve the cause of social transformation (i.e. the NDR): The levers of state power include the legislatures, the executives, the public service, the security forces, the judiciary, parastatals, the public broadcaster, and so on.”

CONCOURT FOTER optVladimir Lenin said that “when the time comes for us to hang the capitalists they will compete with one another to sell us the rope”.  In the same manner, Afrikaners are playing a leading role in assisting the ANC to eclipse Afrikaans as a language of tuition at university level.

Most of those involved are decent and honourable people. Many of them profess a love for Afrikaans and are determined to continue to use it in their private lives.

STATEMENT: ROBBERY AT THE OFFICES OF THE HELEN SUZMAN FOUNDATION IN JOHANNESBURG

HSF logoThe FW de Klerk Foundation would like to express its deep concern over the robbery that occurred at the offices of the Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF) on Sunday, 20 March 2016.

According to media reports, two well-dressed men and a woman broke into the HSF’s offices after threatening a security guard with a firearm. The robbers stole 11 computers, a printer and documents belonging to the HSF.

Accordingly, there is every indication that the motive for the crime was to obtain information – rather than simply to steal office equipment.

TOAST BY DAVE STEWARD AT FW DE KLERK’S 80TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

Some commentators believe that history is driven by great socio-economic forces – and that the role of individuals is marginal. Others argue that it is great individuals – the Alexander the Greats, the Julius Caesars and the Napoleons – who – for better or for worse – determine the course of history. Perhaps it is a combination of both factors: all ages are subject to the ebb and flow of socio-economic tides – but destiny is often determined by exceptional individuals who know how to navigate those tides and who sometimes catch the breaking wave of history. At critical times great individuals have come to the fore: “cometh the hour, cometh the man.”
