FW DE KLERK FOUNDATION EMPOWERS YOUTH AT PHOENIX COLLEGE

Issued by Ismail Joosub on behalf of the FW de Klerk Foundation on 04/03/2025

On 24 February 2025, the FW de Klerk Foundation hosted an engaging session with students from Phoenix College in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, focusing on the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the importance of active citizenship. This engagement forms part of the Foundation’s ongoing Constitutional Advancement Programme aimed at equipping South Africa’s youth with the knowledge and tools necessary to become informed, active participants in the country’s democracy.

The session covered key aspects of the Constitution, such as the right to vote and the responsibility this right carries, with a particular focus on the upcoming 2026 local government elections. Learners were encouraged to recognise how the Constitution impacts their daily lives and the vital role they can play in shaping South Africa’s democratic future.

The youth of South Africa hold the power to shape our nation’s future through their participation in democratic processes,” said Ismail Joosub, Manager of Constitutional Advancement at the FW de Klerk Foundation. “By engaging with young people on the significance of the Constitution and their civic responsibilities, we are fostering a generation of informed leaders who will uphold the values of democracy, equality and human rights.”

Ezra Mendel, a Constitutional Advancement intern, added, “It was incredibly inspiring to witness the enthusiasm and commitment of these young learners. They are not only eager to understand their rights, but also motivated to contribute to social change. It is through these connections that we help foster active and responsible citizens who will drive the future of South Africa.”

Lesego Rabapane, a 18 year old learner at Phoenix College, shared, “Today’s speech deeply moved me, inspiring reflection and gratitude. I have a passion for leadership, democracy and social change. My friend and I have already started volunteering to help where we can. I am eager to contribute to the FW de Klerk Foundation and admire its dedication to promoting peace, education and human rights.

This engagement underscores the Foundation’s commitment to empowering young South Africans to be active, informed and responsible citizens, paving the way for a brighter democratic future.
