The FW de Klerk Foundation calls for peaceful local government elections on 4 November 2026. The Foundation condemns violence and intimidation against candidates, campaigners and voters, irrespective of political affiliation. No one should risk their life for exercising a political right.
Police have reported 20 murders involving political representatives, party members and supporters. Motives must be established in each case, but the loss of life demands a firm response across party lines. The reported fire at an ActionSA candidate’s home also requires investigation, though its cause remains unconfirmed. The Foundation extends its sympathy to the families and communities affected by these deaths.
The response must be grounded in the Constitution. Section 19 protects citizens’ political choices and guarantees free, fair and regular elections. It also protects adult citizens’ rights to vote in secret and stand for public office. Section 12 protects everyone against violence from public or private sources.
“When violence silences a candidate or frightens a voter into staying home, the harm reaches beyond the individual. It restricts the choices available to an entire community,” says Ismail Joosub, Manager of Constitutional Advancement at the FW de Klerk Foundation. “Protecting political participation is essential to a free and fair election.”
The Electoral Code of Conduct requires political parties and candidates to condemn violence and intimidation. Leaders must uphold these commitments within their own ranks, respect opponents’ right to campaign and discourage retaliation or unverified accusations.
Police must investigate threats promptly and impartially, protect those at risk and safeguard election officials and voting stations. Where credible threats exist, protective measures must reach candidates and campaigners in their communities. Protection must extend beyond polling day, including during counting and the formation of municipal councils.
The Foundation encourages registered voters to participate peacefully and report intimidation to the police and the Electoral Commission. Disputes must be resolved through lawful electoral processes and the courts.
South Africa’s democratic future depends on every citizen being able to make a political choice without fear.
END.
