I am very honoured to be asked to make a few comments at this second memorial lecture of FW de Klerk. I have been asked by Elita to do it, and I was asked by Dave Steward, FW’s close friend and associate, who is the chairman of the FW de Klerk Foundation in South Africa to make these remarks.
The recent 10 Year Review of the National Development Plan (NDP) deserves more than passing attention as it points to where South Africa has gone so terribly wrong and what we should have done to achieve a better life for all our people.

On 15 September, the FW de Klerk Foundation made a written submission to the National Council of Provinces on the National Health Insurance Bill. The Foundation analysed key failures of the NHI Bill with specific reference to the constitutional principle of the Rule of Law and rationality, the feasibility of the proposed system and governance concerns, coupled with the unfettered power of the Minister of Health (“the Minister”).
On 15th September, parliaments around the world celebrate International Day of Democracy, introduced by the UN General Assembly in 2007 with the aim of actively promoting the principles of democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights.
The FW de Klerk Foundation is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Raymond Ackerman, founder of Pick ‘n Pay. The Foundation would like to express its heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, especially to his beloved wife Wendy.
