FW DE KLERK FOUNDATION STATEMENT ON THE CRADOCK FOUR INQUEST

Issued by Christo van der Rheede on behalf of the FW de Klerk Foundation on 03/06/2025

The FW de Klerk Foundation notes the reopening of the judicial inquest into the brutal deaths of Matthew Goniwe, Fort Calata, Sicelo Mhlauli and Sparrow Mkonto – the Cradock Four – whose abduction and murder in 1985 shocked the conscience of South Africa.

As this third inquest unfolds in the Eastern Cape High Court, the Foundation recognises its importance in confronting the unfinished business of our past within the framework of justice.

The Foundation stands in unwavering solidarity with Lukhanyo Calata – whose courage and dignity have deepened our bond with him – as well as all families affected by apartheid-era atrocities who have long been denied the opportunity to mourn fully, to heal and to see justice done.

We express our deepest sorrow for this immeasurable suffering and note that the passage of time has not dulled the impact of their loss and the absence of full truth and justice has only compounded their grief.

The Cradock Four inquest is not only about historical accountability, but also reflects the resilience of South Africa’s constitutional order. It demonstrates that even decades later, truth and justice can be pursued through the legal system, strengthening public trust in democratic institutions.

The Foundation sincerely hopes that this inquest will help identify those responsible, whether through direct action or complicity and that the legal process may unfold without obstruction.

Let this moment be a step toward closure, truth and unity for the families and for the country as a whole.
