FW DE KLERK FOUNDATION HOSTS CONSTITUTIONAL EDUCATION SESSION AT RAND GIRLS' HIGH
Issued by Ezra Mendel on behalf of the FW de Klerk Foundation on 03/04/2025
On 25 March 2025, the FW de Klerk Foundation’s Constitutional Advancement Programme (“CAP”) facilitated an impactful session with the students of Rand Girls’ High in Johannesburg. The event, led by intern Ezra Mendel, focused on the practicality of the Constitution in the daily lives of young South Africans, with a specific emphasis on how constitutional rights can shape and empower the youth.
As part of the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to engage young people with constitutional principles, the session encouraged learners to understand their rights as enshrined in the Constitution, with a focus on the Bill of Rights and the various freedoms it guarantees. Ezra Mendel, who spoke passionately to the group, highlighted how the Constitution not only provides essential protections, but also enables individuals to actively contribute to the democratic process.
“The Constitution is not just a document, it is a tool that we can all use to shape our own futures,” said Mendel. “As young people, we have the power to assert our rights and engage with the government to improve our communities. By understanding how the Constitution functions in our daily lives, we can better navigate challenges and contribute to a stronger, more equitable society.”
The students were encouraged to reflect on their roles in South Africa’s democratic framework, particularly in the context of voting, participation in civic life and the role of social activism. Through the discussion, they gained a deeper understanding of how their rights, from education to healthcare, are safeguarded by the Constitution and how they can leverage these rights for personal and societal advancement.
“This was an incredibly rewarding experience,” Mendel continued. “The enthusiasm of the students was inspiring. They were eager to learn not only about their rights, but also how they could actively use them to bring about positive change in South Africa. It’s clear that the future of our democracy is in good hands.”
The event at Rand Girls’ High marked another milestone in the Foundation’s mission to educate and empower the youth, ensuring that they are equipped with the tools and knowledge necessary for a vibrant, thriving democracy.
