FW DE KLERK FOUNDATION ENGAGES WITH MATRIC LEARNERS ON THE CONSTITUTION AND DEMOCRACY

Issued by Ismail Joosub on behalf of the FW de Klerk Foundation on 05/02/2025

On 25 January 2025, the FW de Klerk Foundation held an engaging and informative session with 70 final-year students at BASA Tutorial Institute, located in Johannesburg’s Central Business District. The event is part of the Foundation’s ongoing mission to educate South Africa’s youth on the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the vital role they play in upholding democracy.

The session highlighted the historical journey that led to the creation of South Africa’s Constitution, emphasising key aspects such as the Bill of Rights, the right to equality and the right to vote. Learners were encouraged to understand the significance of their civic duties and the power of their vote, particularly with the upcoming local government elections in 2026.

The future of South Africa lies in the hands of its youth,” said Ismail Joosub, Manager of Constitutional Advancement at the Foundation. “By ensuring that young people understand their rights and responsibilities, we are fostering a generation of active and informed citizens. These learners are on the cusp of adulthood and soon will have the power to shape the direction of our nation through voting and participation in local governance.

Ezra Mendel, Constitutional Advancement intern, added, “Having the opportunity to connect with young South Africans and discuss their constitutional rights was inspiring. It’s essential that they understand not only the power they hold, but also the responsibility to use it wisely as they engage in democratic processes.”

The Foundation left the learners with the following powerful message: “The Constitution is not just a document; it is the bedrock of our democracy and the promise of a better future for every South African. We hope that all of you will take that message to heart as you step into the world with the power to influence the future of our nation.”

This engagement is part of the FW de Klerk Foundation’s broader initiative to ensure that the values of democracy, human rights and active citizenship resonate with South Africa’s youth. The Foundation is committed to empowering young South Africans through education, guiding them toward becoming responsible and informed leaders in their communities and beyond.
