The FW de Klerk Foundation congratulates H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf (Republic of Djibouti, Eastern Region) on his election as the Chairperson of the African Union (“AU”) Commission and H.E. Selma Malika Haddadi (Algeria, Northern Region) on her election as Deputy Chairperson. Both were elected during the 38th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa on 15-16 February 2025. Their election represents a significant milestone for African unity and leadership as the continent faces a complex geopolitical landscape.

The FW de Klerk Foundation commends their commitment to advancing the AU’s objectives, including promoting peace, security and economic development. Their leadership will be crucial in shaping the future of the continent and in driving forward the ambitious goals set out in Agenda 2063.

However, while celebrating this leadership change, the Foundation expresses concern over the challenges faced by Africa’s youth. The continent is home to more than 400 million young people aged 15 to 35, representing the world’s largest youth population. Despite this potential, Africa faces high youth unemployment, which in some regions exceeds 25%. This alarming statistic highlights the need for urgent investment in education, skills development and job creation to ensure that Africa’s young people can contribute meaningfully to the continent’s growth.

In addition to high unemployment rates, Africa’s youth face significant challenges in accessing quality education and healthcare. According to the African Development Bank, over 60% of young people in some regions are not in education, employment, or training (“NEET”), which severely limits their opportunities for personal and professional growth. Health challenges, including high rates of teenage pregnancy, HIV/AIDS and limited access to reproductive healthcare, further hinder the potential of young Africans. Addressing these issues is vital for the continent’s long-term stability and growth, as the youth population remains central to Africa’s demographic and economic future.

Christo van der Rheede, Executive Director of the FW de Klerk Foundation, stated, “While the election of new leadership is a cause for optimism, we must not overlook the urgent need to invest in Africa’s young people. Their potential is a key to the continent’s future prosperity.”

Ismail Joosub, Manager of Constitutional Advancement, added, “The foundation of a thriving Africa lies in its youth. To truly unlock the continent’s potential, we must prioritise youth development across all sectors, ensuring education, innovation and entrepreneurship take centre stage.”
