In recognition of Money Smart Week 2025, the FW de Klerk Foundation’s Constitutional Advancement team shares The Constitution in Every Rand Report MSWSA 2025.

This report provides an executive summary framing financial literacy as both an economic necessity and a constitutional imperative. The next pages combine statistics, case studies and tips – always linking back to the Bill of Rights and the needs of South African youth.

The content flows to illustrate challenges and solutions in a relatable way. We highlight issues like the persistence of informal savings (stokvels and cash), the high cost of commuting from townships, the burden of “Black Tax” on young professionals and the gaps in what our education system taught us about money. Throughout, we reference constitutional values and specific rights – such as the right to education, the right to choose one’s trade and the state’s duty to foster social security – to ground our proposals in South Africa’s supreme law.
