The FW de Klerk Foundation has decided to institute an annual FW de Klerk Memorial Lecture as one of its actions to commemorate the former president’s legacy on the anniversary of his passing each year.
Each lecture will address one of the causes that FW de Klerk championed during his career.
These include:
- the constitutional transformation of South Africa;
- the centrality of the Constitution, the rule of law and the Bill of Rights;
- the accommodation of diversity in multicultural and multilingual societies;
- the resolution of intractable problems in conflicted societies; and
- nuclear disarmament.
We can think of no-one better placed than Lord Renwick of Clifton to deliver this year’s lecture. As the British Ambassador to South Africa during the early ‘nineties, Robin Renwick had an unparalleled vantage point from which to observe the constitutional transformation process, to get to know and interact with the principal role-players – and, from time to time, to give the process a helpful nudge in the right direction.
The topic of this year’s lecture is: FW de Klerk and the Need for Another New Beginning.
