MEET OUR INTERN: THANDO MALINGA

Issued by the FW de Klerk Foundation on 06/08/2025

The FW de Klerk Foundation is pleased to have Thando Malinga on board as an online intern.
We recently sat down with her to learn more about her background and goals for the internship…

FWDKF: Why did you want to intern with the FW de Klerk Foundation?

TM: I chose to intern at the FW de Klerk Foundation because of its strong constitutional legacy. I believe in the Foundation’s role in promoting and upholding the constitution across South Africa’s social, economic and political landscape. As a young African scholar, I am committed to contributing to a truly democratic and constitutionally aligned South Africa, not only for the youth, but for the nation as a whole. Being part of this team feels like the right step towards creating the change I want to see.

FWDKF: What do you hope to achieve/learn during the internship?

TM: During my time with the Foundation, particularly in the Constitutional Advancement Programme, I am determined to learn as much as possible about the Constitution and practical ways to implement it to effect meaningful change. I want to gain a deeper understanding of how constitutional principles can be applied to address real social challenges.

FWDKF: What is your background, country of origin, and research focus?

TM: I am a proud South African woman, originally from Johannesburg and now residing in Cape Town. I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in African Studies at the University of Cape Town. My research focuses on a psycho-political analysis of Fanonian national consciousness, with a case study on South Africa’s pursuit of economic justice in the post-colonial context.

FWDKF: What are your career ambitions?

TM: I aspire to build a multidimensional career that bridges various sectors. My goal is to enter the field of diplomacy, with a focus on youth empowerment, sustainability and development across the African continent, ultimately working towards becoming an ambassador. Alongside this, I have a strong passion for social entrepreneurship and creating positive and impactful change in disadvantaged communities.
