MEET OUR INTERN: MPONE KOMAKO
Issued by the FW de Klerk Foundation on 12/02/2026
The FW de Klerk Foundation is pleased to have Mpone Komako on board as an online intern.
We recently sat down with her to learn more about her background and goals for the internship…
FWDKF: Why did you want to intern with the FW de Klerk Foundation?
MK: I wanted to intern with the FW de Klerk Foundation because I am deeply interested in how constitutional rights are monitored, interpreted and realised in practice. My previous experience in public-interest law confirmed that I am most fulfilled in spaces that value careful research, critical thinking and meaningful engagement with social and constitutional issues. The Foundation offered an opportunity to learn within an intellectually stimulating environment while contributing to work that has real public significance.
FWDKF: What do you hope to achieve/learn during the internship?
MK: During the internship I hope to further develop my legal research and writing skills, particularly in relation to constitutional rights, public accountability and governance. I am keen to learn how in-depth research is translated into accessible outputs that inform public discourse. I also want to grow as a thoughtful, disciplined researcher through exposure to the Foundation’s work.
FWDKF: What is your background, country of origin, and research focus?
MK: I am a South African. I received an LLB from the University of Johannesburg and I am currently completing an LLM in Environmental Law at the University of Pretoria. My research focuses on the role of public participation in advancing environmental justice for marginalised communities, with a particular focus on how constitutional principles such as dignity, equality and accountability shape environmental decision-making.
FWDKF: What are your career ambitions?
MK: My long-term ambition is to work in public-interest and policy-oriented spaces where I can use environmental law and constitutional principles to advance social and environmental justice. I am particularly interested in roles that combine research, writing and advocacy to support accountable governance and the protection of vulnerable communities.
