MEET OUR INTERN: ESTHER MABONDA
Issued by the FW de Klerk Foundation on 26/05/2025
The FW de Klerk Foundation is pleased to have Esther Mabonda on board as an online intern.
We recently sat down with her to learn more about her background and goals for the internship…
FWDKF: Why did you want to intern with the FW de Klerk Foundation?
EM: I was drawn to the FW de Klerk Foundation because of its commitment to constitutional democracy, human rights and the rule of law in South Africa. As someone deeply passionate about social justice and governance, I saw this internship as a valuable opportunity to contribute meaningfully, while deepening my understanding of the country’s constitutional framework.
FWDKF: What do you hope to achieve/learn during the internship?
EM: I hope to gain practical insight into how advocacy and research intersect with legal reform and policy-making in South Africa. I aim to enhance my skills in legal analysis, research communication and public engagement, especially in the context of defending democratic values.
FWDKF: What is your background, country of origin, and research focus?
EM: I am South African, with a background in Political Science and current studies in Law. My master’s research focused on the intersection of socioeconomic inequality and human rights, specifically how lived experiences of poverty contribute to poor health outcomes and undermine access to basic rights in South Africa.
FWDKF: What are your career ambitions?
EM: Over the next five years, I aspire to work in the areas of constitutional law, public policy, or compliance, advocating for equitable systems and legal reform. I hope to contribute to national or international institutions that champion social justice, and eventually pursue doctoral studies to further inform my work.
