Issued by the FW de Klerk Foundation on 28/08/2024
The FW de Klerk Foundation is pleased to have Alfred Sibusiso Mahkuntsu, a University of Cape Town LLM student, on board as an intern.
We recently sat down with him to learn more about his background and goals for the internship…
FWDKF: Why did you want to intern with the FW de Klerk Foundation?
ASM: My academic and professional journey has been driven by a deep commitment to justice, equality and the rule of law, principles that align perfectly with the mission of the FW de Klerk Foundation. I am particularly inspired by the Foundation’s dedication to upholding democratic values and human rights in South Africa. The Foundation’s mission aligns perfectly with my passion for human rights and legal advocacy and I believe that interning here will allow me to contribute meaningfully to these important causes.
FWDKF: What do you hope to learn or achieve during your internship?
ASM: During my internship, I hope to gain practical experience in legal advocacy and constitutional literacy. I aim to learn from the experienced professionals at the Foundation and to understand better how legal frameworks can be utilised to promote social justice and human rights. Additionally, I aspire to contribute to ongoing projects that align with my research interests in international trade law and its implications for equitable economic development.
FWDKF: What is your background, country of origin and research focus?
ASM: I was born in Welkom in the Free State Province, however, my family moved to Carletonville, Gauteng where I did my primary school. We then relocated to the East Cape province where I completed high school.
I am currently pursuing an LLM in International Trade Law at the University of Cape Town, having completed my Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree at the University of Fort Hare. My research focuses on the legal mechanisms that promote equitable economic development and protect individual rights, with a particular interest in how these frameworks can support marginalised communities and foster a more just and inclusive society.
FWDKF: What are your career ambitions (i.e. next 5 years)?
ASM: My career goals are rooted in making a meaningful impact in the legal field, particularly in human rights and economic development. I aspire to use my legal expertise to advocate for marginalised communities and contribute to the development of a more just and inclusive society. Ultimately, I hope to work in an environment where I can influence policies and legal frameworks that promote equality, protect individual rights and uphold the rule of law.
