GERMAN TOUR GROUP VISITS THE CCTSA

On Wednesday, 19 November, the FW de Klerk Foundation hosted a group of twenty German visitors, who are currently touring South Africa to gain first-hand insights into the political and socio-economic condition of the country, at their offices in Gardens, Cape Town.
The visit, organised by the German newspaper “Die Zeit” and guided by Bartholomaeus Grill, renowned Africa correspondent and book author, included a meeting with some of the Foundation’s representatives, a guided tour of the Foundation’s Centre for the Constitutional Transformation of South Africa (“CCTSA”) and presentations by two Cape Town City Councillors from the Good Party.
Once the Foundation’s representatives, Christina Teichmann, Deputy Chairperson of the FW de Klerk Foundation, and Brenda Steyn, Manager of the Foundation’s Legacy Programme and the CCTSA, welcomed the guests, Axolile Notywala and Roscoe Palm, Cape Town City Councillors, spoke to the group about the challenges the country is currently facing, such as corruption, high unemployment, low economic growth and inadequate service delivery (especially for the poor).
After the presentations, and a question-and-answer session, Christina Teichmann briefed the group on the activities of the Foundation, which President De Klerk founded with the aim of safeguarding and promoting the South African Constitution.
Brenda Steyn then took the visitors on a tour of the CCTSA exhibition, which tells the unique story of South Africa’s transition from an unjust apartheid system to a constitutional democracy.
During the tour, Brenda pointed out the difficulties and crises that had to be overcome during the constitutional transformation process, as well as how important it is for South Africans, especially the youth, to understand this history and the role of the Constitution, in securing the country’s democratic future.
