FW DE KLERK FOUNDATION YOUTH LEADERS ADVOCATE FOR INCLUSIVE GLOBAL REFORM AT BRICS POLICY DIALOGUE
Issued by Ismail Joosub on behalf of the FW de Klerk Foundation on 17/10/2024
The FW de Klerk Foundation commends its University of Pretoria representatives, Ngcwelekazi Dlanjwa and Gugulethu Ngwenya, for their insightful contributions at the recent policy dialogue on “South Africa’s Chair of BRICS: A Retrospective Review,” hosted by the University of Pretoria’s Centre for the Advancement of Scholarship. Their involvement underscores the Foundation’s commitment to youth leadership and advancing constitutional values in global economic discussions.
Gugulethu Ngwenya, Political Officer of the University of Pretoria Chapter, stressed the importance of addressing deep-rooted inequalities within the global financial system. “BRICS is not about replacing one currency with another, but about ensuring that the economic frameworks we develop promote fairness and equity. It’s crucial that we address the structures that have kept historically marginalised countries on the periphery,” Ngwenya remarked.
Ngcwelekazi Dlanjwa, Head of Marketing and Communication of the Chapter, expressed her optimism about the role of youth in these discussions. “This is our moment to advocate for a global system that reflects constitutional principles of fairness, equality and justice. BRICS+ provides an opportunity to foster a truly inclusive international order, one that moves beyond outdated labels like ‘Third World’ and actively promotes development for all member states.” Dlanjwa captured a video of her experiences at the event to share with fellow youth leaders.
The FW de Klerk Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to promoting youth engagement and supporting policy dialogues that uphold the values enshrined in South Africa’s Constitution. The participation of young leaders like Dlanjwa and Ngwenya in these critical discussions is a testament to the potential the youth have to drive positive change on the global stage.
