The FW de Klerk Foundation was proud to support the South African Institute of International Affairs (“SAIIA”) Youth Programme during its dynamic conference on 27 and 28 February 2025, focused on empowering young African leaders to engage with the priorities of the G20 and learn about the Y20 agenda. The conference, held in Johannesburg, facilitated a critical dialogue on the inclusion of youth perspectives in policymaking related to global governance.

The event culminated in the adoption of the Young African Leaders’ Declaration 2025, a landmark document containing key recommendations that reflect the pressing needs and aspirations of African youth. These include the integration of economic empowerment into healthcare, enhancing governance and gender inclusivity, ensuring equitable youth representation in climate discussions and promoting education and digital innovation.

Ezra Mendel, the Foundation’s Constitutional Advancement Programme intern, participated in the conference and reflected on its significance: “Being part of this powerful dialogue was a transformative experience. It’s inspiring to see young Africans coming together to imagine a better future  – a future in which the youth are not only participants, but leaders in global governance. The priorities outlined in the Declaration will undoubtedly influence the direction of international policies that impact our lives.”
