Episode 5: The Tricameral Parliament; States of Emergency and the 1987 Election (1984 – 1988)

In episode 5 of the FW de Klerk Foundation’s exclusive biographical videos on former President FW de Klerk, viewers will hear Mr De Klerk’s reflections on the time between 1984 and 1988, including references to the Tricameral Parliament; his role as Chairman of the Council of Ministers in the House of Assembly; the Reform Debate between the National Party Leadership; Country-wide unrest and the National States of Emergency; his relationship with PW Botha; the Rubicon Speech; his role as Minister of National Education; and the 1987 Election.

Spanning 1936 to 1982, the first 4 episodes covered Mr De Klerk’s childhood, education, early career as an attorney, his entrance into Government leading up to the split of the National Party and the Campaign against Andries Treurnicht and the Right Wing.

Released for the first time on what would have been FW de Klerk’s 87th birthday on 18 March, the series of 17 exclusive video interviews feature the former president sharing his memories of his life and career with FW de Klerk Foundation Chairman and long-time associate and friend, Dave Steward.

The Foundation will continue to release a new episode every two weeks to provide a useful resource for anyone who is interested in learning more about the crucial role that he played in the constitutional transformation of South Africa.
