Issued by Christina Teichmann on behalf of the FW de Klerk Foundation on 26/10/2026
On Tuesday, 20 October 2026, a delegation of the FW de Klerk Foundation comprising of Deputy Chairperson Christina Teichmann and Legacy Manager Brenda Steyn visited the SA Children’s Home in Gardens, Cape Town, where they met with Nina Crawford and Dico van Eeden to learn more about the home’s history and mission.
This year, the SA Children’s Home is one of a few selected non-governmental organisations that will receive financial support from the FW de Klerk Foundation in recognition of the excellent work they are doing and the valuable contribution that they make towards fulfilling the constitutional rights of vulnerable groups, such as children. The funds for these organisations were raised through the 2026 Nedbank SA Charity Golf Day, a yearly event of which President De Klerk is a Life Patron.
Originally known as the ‘Orphan House’ the SA Children’s Home was founded in 1808 by Mrs Moller, a wealthy Dutch widow, who was assisted in this task by members of the Groote Kerk and the Evangelical Church, two of the oldest churches in South Africa.
Today, the SA Children’s Home, the first welfare institution established in South Africa, cares for children between the ages of 5 and 18, providing a safe and nurturing home where they can feel supported, continue their education, develop their potential and build a brighter future.
The ultimate goal is to reunite the children with their families as no institution can replace a family home. However, this is not always possible as parents are no longer alive, or not capable of looking after their children because of drug abuse or other issues.
With the financial support to the SA Children’s Home, the FW de Klerk Foundation aims to raise awareness for the needs of vulnerable children. To make “our Constitution a reality for all” is the Foundation’s mission. This goal can only be achieved if all sectors and actors of society work together.

FW DE KLERK FOUNDATION CALLS FOR TRANSPARENT MUNICIPAL RECOVERY PLANS AMID R400 BILLION WATER INFRASTRUCTURE BACKLOG
South Africa faces an estimated R400 billion backlog to repair and upgrade ageing water infrastructure across 107 water services authorities. The FW de Klerk Foundation calls for transparent, municipality-specific recovery plans with clear deadlines, measurable milestones and accountable authorities. Reliable access to water is a constitutional right, and infrastructure spending must translate into measurable improvements in service delivery.

RED FLAG: NO OPPORTUNITY FOR PUBLIC COMMENTS ON FINAL VERSION OF ELECTORAL REGULATIONS.
The FW de Klerk Foundation has raised concerns about a change introduced into the final Municipal Electoral Regulations that was not included in the draft published for public comment. The Foundation argues that the addition of a sworn-statement requirement for election objections raises important questions about meaningful public participation, electoral transparency, and compliance with Constitutional Court principles governing post-consultation amendments.
